Differences Between Your Username and Your Server Nickname
So, before you start with username and nickname usage, it’s important to mention that they are two different things.
These are both normal Discord features, so changing them is a pretty straightforward process.
Still, let’s understand the differences before proceeding.
Discord Nickname vs. Username | |
---|---|
Username | Nickname |
When you change your username, you are changing your name on all Discord servers. The current username you have will appear on multiple servers instead of just one of them. | On the other hand, the nickname you choose on a server is directly linked to a specific server. That’s why some people refer to the nickname as “server name.” |

How to Change Your Nickname on a Discord Server
Now that you know how to change the username on your account, it’s time to change your nickname.
Once again, remember that when you change your nickname, you are doing this on just one server.
Step 1: Get the Necessary Permissions from the Server Owner
First of all, you can’t change your nickname if the owner of the server doesn’t give you all the necessary permissions.
Therefore, if you are just a server member, it’s important to ask for this role in order to change your nickname successfully:
Step 2: Select “Change Nickname” on the Discord server
Once you’ve got the permissions, it’s important to select the “Change nickname” option in the dropdown menu of the server.
In case you are trying to choose a new nickname, and you don’t have the permissions, a “sad message” will pop up:
If this message does pop up, tell the admin to check the Server Settings again.
Step 3: Choose Your Own Nickname!
Here, all you need to do is choose a brand new name and you are good to go! Tap the save button and enjoy a new adventure on Discord.

If by any chance you need to find someone’s usernames instead of the nickname, just go to the Server Menu and then click on Member Tab:
